The Ombudsman Scheme Approved Inspection Procedure

To become a Membership of The Scottish Guild of Removers, applicant businesses must pass an inspection and accreditation process approved by The Removals Industry Ombudsman Scheme.

The process involves the following checks on Members and businesses applying for Membership:

Insurance Verification

  • Goods In Transit
  • Goods In Storage (if applicable)
  • Vehicle/Fleet
  • Public & Employee Liability

Vehicles

The remover’s vehicle(s) are checked for their suitability to carry out removals to a professional and competent level.

Those operating Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) are legally required to have relevant qualifications in place. Removers must provide copies of the following to the inspector.

  • Current MOT Certificates
  • Current Department Of Transport Operator’s Licence (if applicable)
  • Current Department Of Transport Certificate Of Professional Competence (if applicable)

Operational Qualifications/Training

The Remover has to satisfy the inspector as to the competence levels of operational staff and that all operational staff are trained.

Complaints Procedures and Insurance Claims

The Remover has to satisfy the inspector as to the efficiency of their complaints procedures and their method of progressing insurance claims.

 Documentation

The Remover has to satisfy the inspector as to the standard of their documentation.

Equipment

The Remover has to satisfy the inspector that they have the correct equipment to carry out the removal services they advertise to a good standard.

Storage Facility (if applicable)

Removers may be asked to provide a minimum of 5 positive customer testimonials from within the last 12 months.

Trading Standards and Health & Safety Compliance

Removers must certify that they have no current convictions with either Trading Standards or the Health and Safety Executive.

Thereafter, members commit to making themselves available for accreditation appraisal and further inspection during each subsequent membership period.
